German trainer Andreas Wohler and Australian Bloodstock combined for Melbourne Cup success in 2014 with Protectionist and the team are looking to strike again this year with Ashrun.

Australian Bloodstock recently secured ownership in the lightly-raced stayer following his impressive second behind Call The Win in the Group Two Prix Kergorlay (3000m) in France.

With a trip to Australia confirmed, one punter placed $4000 on Ashrun over the weekend to win the Melbourne Cup at $51.

His price has since been slashed to $18 with TAB, although $34 was still available with BetEasy on Monday morning.

Ashrun will head into the Melbourne spring with a similar profile to Protectionist, who took out the Prix Kergorlay prior to his dominant victory in the Melbourne Cup.

With just nine runs under his belt, Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said Ashrun was a horse still on the up.

“Those exposed horses, they land with bigger weights and sometimes leave their best in Europe. We’re hoping this horse hasn’t reached its peak,” Lovett said.

“Not dissimilar to when Protectionist came out, he hadn’t hit his peak, he was still on the up. He hadn’t won a Group One race when he won the Melbourne Cup.”

“He’s a pretty exciting horse, he’s lightly-raced, I think there’s still a lot more to come.”

Lovett said Ashrun was a horse that had been on their radar for some time.

“He was quite a progressive horse at the end of last season and I know the owners had some pretty serious offers from the bigger players in Europe.”

“He wasn’t for sale and we just kept our eye on him in the hope that he’d develop into a Cups-type horse.

“The owners were obviously a bit reluctant to sell, thankfully for us it’s all fallen into place and we’ve been able to secure him at the right time.”

Ashrun will contest both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the spring before heading back to Europe with Wohler.

Australian Bloodstock also have 5YO entire Collide heading to Australia after running in the Prix Kergorlay.

The son for Frankel, who will be trained by Kris Lees, finished sixth behind Call The Wind, but Lovett wasn’t disheartened by the performance.

“He was given no hope with the ride and I still thought he was very brave sticking on.”

“The winner of the Kergorlay, Call The Wind, he’s a serious Group One horse in Europe so I think they’re the right form lines this year.”

Collide is currently $51 (TAB) for the Melbourne Cup.
