Gold Trip might not have that ‘wow’ factor when he works, but champion rider Damien Oliver says he suspects the import is holding back something special for Saturday’s $5 million feature.
Oliver took his first ride on the Australian Bloodstock-owned import last Saturday at The Valley and he said on Tuesday that Gold Trip gave him the impression that he had a lot more to give when the barriers open on race day.
“He’s not a horse that makes you go ‘wow’ on his trackwork but he feels like a horse that will certainly switch on when it comes to race day,” Oliver said.
“He’s quite a relaxed type of horse but he looks great, feels great and his action was good and his fitness is really good as well. Very clean in the wind.”
Oliver is seeking his third Cox Plate victory on Saturday after partnering Dane Ripper (1997) for Bart Cummings and Northerly (2001) for Fred Kersley.
Oliver said he will be keeping an eye on the weather. “He’s got some great form overseas and if the rain comes he does mind a soft track,” he said.
“I am really pleased with him.”
Co-trainer Ciaron Maher is pleased also.
“He was very stiff when he landed (last month) and had some muscle soreness but has really freed up and he’s a happy horse now,” he said.
“He’s got that solid European form. His last two starts he’d been placed in group 1s and ran really well in the Arc (Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe) 12 months ago so he’s a quality horse and I like the way he’s come together.
“He’s pretty exciting and the weather could play into his hands.”
