Premier trainer Tony Gollan is looking to add another feather to his cap, this time with the enigmatic Graff when the frustrating speedster has his first start for his new stable in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000.

Gollan has enjoyed a high level of success with new stable acquisitions, winning at stakes level with the likes of Krone, Jonker, Baller and Vega One recently.

Fittingly, Vega One will join Graff in the $1 million feature, while Gollan is attempting to get Jonker to the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup in two weeks after he was forced to scratch from the 10,000 due to leg issues.

The five-year-old flies first-up, and Gollan says there is no question as to his ability, it is just a matter of whether his mind is on the job.

“He has good ability – the horse can really gallop, it is just a matter of getting his mind right on the day which history says hasn’t always been easy,” he said.

“The main thing is that he has good ability – which he does – you can’t manufacture that so it is just a matter of getting him to switch on for race day, if he does he is a live chance but if wants to go out there and go through the motions, that is what he’ll do.

“Hopefully a change of scenery and a new environment can get that out of him on Saturday.”

Gollan said there is no secret method to getting the new stable changes to fire for him, rather a case of the horses enjoying their new environment.

“We have had a bit of luck with them for a fair while really, that is the nature of the beast when you train up here,” he said.

“You get these horses from down south who had good form and just lost their way a bit, you give them a change in scenery and a lot of the time a lesser grade and off you go.

“I don’t think we do anything extra special when it comes to them but we have had a bit of luck getting horses off other stables.”

After filling the first two placings in the race with Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom in 2014, Gollan believes his team of Graff and Vega One represent his strongest 10,000 hand since then.

“It would be my strongest hand in it since then and if Jonker had of been sound it would have been my best team,” he said.

“The market tells you Jonker was my best chance but it wasn’t to be.”

Meanwhile, the Brisbane Racing Club has awarded life membership to journalist Peter Howard for his work with the Thoroughbred Racing History Association, where he served as president since 2015.

Howard has been a long-time contributor to The Courier-Mail, and it is under his leadership the TRHA gained government recognition as a provider of valuable heritage services to the racing industry.
