WHY WE LOVE HIM

“We went looking for a SHALAA at the Magic Millions and this colt was by far the best on ground.” – Jamie Lovett

SHALAA is a sire we believe we are yet to see the best of here.

His best crop of 2 year olds are currently hitting the tracks, and this colt was a fair way under the sale average at $240,000.

This colt is out of a G3 PLACED Flying Spur mare who has had 3 foals to race for 3 winners. What we love about this good producing mare is that her first two runners have won $250,000 plus and her 3rd to the races has already won 2 from only 4 starts.

Unfortunately at the time Archie Alexander felt he was the colt of the sale and we were the underbidder, but, after pestering Archie he has agreed to let us buy into the colt , and we are thrilled to be able to race him in our colours.

He is BOBS and SUPERVOBIS registered as well as fully paid up for the Magic Millions Race Series.

‘’We have a huge opinion of the stallion, and firmly believe this season we will see the best of his crop. I remember this colt well, he was a stand out, huge hip, intelligent head and a beautiful mover. To be fair, he looks later 2yo type with plenty of scope into his 3yo season. Well bought, loved him.” – Paul Messara – Arrowfield Stud

‘’I love the stallion, we have 3 in our system and they all go well, one in particular is top draw. We went looking for a Shalaa, and it didn’t take long to find him, he found us. Super colt. Luck would have it, Australian Bloodstock were on him too, they are great judges, and we are delighted to have the colours in the stable.” – Archie Alexander

Watch this outstanding Shalaa Colt move as a yearling!

THE SIRE – SHALAA (Invincible Spirit x Ghurra)

Europe’s dominant sprinting 2YO star by sire of sires Invincible Spirit. Now the sire of an Australian $1.15 million yearling, Breeders’ Plate & Magic Millions star Shaquero and Spring debut 2YO stakeswinner Semillion.

The top-rated juvenile in England and France in 2015 joined the Arrowfield Stallion roster in 2017 in partnership with Al Shaqab.

Shalaa made an immediate impact in 2020/21 with his first-crop 2YOs headed by dual Group 3 & Magic Millions Classic winner Shaquero, Group-placed fillies Nice For What & Tayla’s Moment & stakes-placed city winner Hunnam. He more than held his own among a dynamic group of First Season Sires to finish fourth on that Premiership with 7 winners and earnings of $1.9 million.

Buyers liked what they saw and paid more than six times his fee for 76 of Shalaa’s second-crop yearlings, including the Shalaa-Honesty Prevails colt purchased for $1.15 million by James Harron at Magic Millions.

Shalaa has fuelled that enthusiasm with 2021 European Group 1 winner No Speak Alexander, and in Australia, debut 2YO stakeswinner Semillion and 12 other winners in the first three months of the 2021/22 season.

Shalaa has received outstanding support from Australasian breeders, serving more than 600 mares in his first four seasons, including 169 in 2020. And his progeny are in the hands of major Australian trainers, among them Hawkes Racing,  Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, John O’Shea, Peter & Paul Snowden, Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.

THE TRAINER ARCHIE ALEXANDER

Archie’s decision to start training racehorses – in Ballarat, north west of Melbourne – came as no surprise to those that have seen him learn the craft from some of the world’s most respected and successful trainers.

As the son of Hamish Alexander, who bought Derby winner Generous as a foal and is now working with Goffs Ireland, there were plenty of sales catalogues throughout the house during his childhood and by the age of ten Archie had worked out the training life was going to be his destiny. School holidays were spent riding out for one of the true greats of the jumps game, Nicky Henderson, in Lambourn, UK.

THE DAMRECOINAGE (Flying Spur x Sovereign Duchess)

Group 3 placed Flying Spur mare with three foals on the ground for three winners!
