Thursday, 8 March 2012: Firming favourite for Saturday’s G1 Australian Cup Lucas Cranach has been scratched and will take no further part in the Autumn carnival.

Racing Victoria stewards have been advised by trainer Anthony Freedman that Lucas Cranach has suffered a leg injury, ruling him out of all engagements until the spring.

The injury is a major blow for Freedman as the importd stayer had returned to racing in dashing style with an impressive first up win in the G2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield.

The former German trained galloper joined the Freedman stables last spring and was plagued with leg problems in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup but still managed a creditable third behind Dunaden.

His absence from Saturday’s Australian Cup field will void the race of considerable interest as he was hailed as the major challenger to 2010 Melbourne Cup winner, Americain, the classy French stayer now trained in Australia by David Hayes.
