Racing.com’s Roger Oldridge reported:
Numbers in the form guide don’t always paint the full picture and Lunakorn is a case in point.
Her past three starts read last, eighth and eighth.
The final run in that triumvirate, in the G2 Queen of the South, is the most glaring example of why punters must dive deeper than just a read of results.
“I’d go and watch her last run in Adelaide, she should’ve pissed in,” co-trainer Sam Freedman said of the Queen of the South performance.
“She was held up and ran in to brick walls and just never got out.”
Lunakorn resumes on Saturday back at Benchmark level, in a small field at Caulfield where she is considered a relative outsider ($10) against short-priced favourite, Turaath ($2.15) in Sportsbet’s market.
The Maddie Raymond-trained five-year-old is four runs into an impressive preparation and coming off a dominant win at Benchmark 84 level at Flemington three weeks ago.
She might be headed for bigger races, just as a confident Freedman believes Lunakorn is.
“She’s got the potential to be a Stakes winner for sure,” said Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony.
“She’s flying and I think she can run a big race first-up. I think she’s in the zone that mare.”
Groundswell was scratched from The Valley last week due to a wide gate and, while he has drawn nicely in barrier eight on Saturday, he must contend with boom gelding Ayrton for the first of what is likely to be consecutive starts.
“His goal is the Rupert Clarke, so this race will give him a nice little space run into that race as well,” he said.
“He’s in good shape and holding his form nicely.”
Of the other Freedman runners at Caulfield on Saturday, the stable expects Delphi to improve off this first-up run when he gets out to a more suitable trip, while Bedford has an important gear changes as he steps to 2400m for the first time in his 33-start career.
Blinkers off, first time.
“There’s a few things we’re actually trying with him,” Freedman said.
“He’ll be able to settle quite close I would think and, provided he runs out the mile-and-a-half strongly, he should be there or thereabouts.”
