Under a confident Ryan Moore Protectionist “burst clear” in the 2014 Melbourne Cup giving both Australian Bloodstock and master German Trainer Andreas Wohler one of their greatest triumphs.
The well bred future stallion prospect won Australia’s greatest race at only his 10th start and would go on to win the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and Group 2 Grosser Hansa-Preis.
After being retired in 2016 as the final son of champion Monsun to go to stud he was well supported by the European breeding industry including servicing the dams of the past two German Derby winners.
German Bloodstock agent Ronald Rauscher who has a long association with Australian Bloodstock was very bullish on the stud prospects of Protectionist.
“People forget what a freakish horse Protectionist was. He was the $1.50 favourite for Germany’s biggest two year old race before an accident meant he couldn’t run in the race and when you consider that Monsun even though he was a freakish sire was not renowned for producing two year olds, only achieving 2% Stakes winners vs his 17% Stakes Winners in general, Protectionist was always special.” – Ronald Rauscher
With an impressive Group 3 Bavarian Classic (German Derby lead-up) win by Lambo (by Lindara) recently things are looking very promising indeed for Protectionist’s stud career.

‘’We are delighted to see what PROTECTIONIST is doing so far this season. Not only have we seen his 3yo crop come to the fore in Germany, he has also sired a winner in Ireland and France.” – Jamie Lovett

Another of his progeny making waves is talented filly Amazing Grace (by Amabelle) who is both Listed and Group 3 placed after 4 races for trainer Waldemar Hickst.
Australian Bloodstock secured an outstanding looking filly by Zippity Do Da named Zippy Power at last year’s BBAG sales. She is trained by Kris Lees and is due to have a jump out in 2 weeks.
“He surprised some in his 2yo season where he was well represented with two Stakes placed fillies. However it has come as no surprise to us that early in his 3yo season he is the leading 2nd Crop Sire in Europe by horses/runners. There is a real opportunity now in Germany for Protectionist to be the leading Sire for years to come.’’ – Jamie Lovett
Protectionist had both superior speed and staying ability as a racehorse and there is no doubt he is stamping these qualities into his progeny.
