It is an outstanding performance for a horse to make the field for any Group 1 race but for a syndicator to have two runners in a top-level race is a brilliant achievement for syndicator Australian Bloodstock.
The Group 1 BMW is worth $2.25 million with a winner’s cheque of $1.23 million to be the main support act to the $3.5 million Golden Slipper but the owners of Australian Bloodstock duo Mawingo and Hathras have a chance at a much quicker return on their investment than those engaged in the two-year-old scamper.
Yearling buyers have to wait a minimum of six months just to see if even the most precocious youngster will develop into a Golden Slipper contender with high price tags having no influence over a two-year-old’s ability but buying a tried horse has the advantage of providing a much faster return.
The success of Australian Bloodstock’s business plan of working harder than anybody to find the best tried horses, both locally and internationally, capable of winning lucrative races in Australia, will be on show when Mawingo and Hathras step out in The BMW, the latter, just four months after arriving in Australia.
“It’s fantastic for our business to have two horses in The BMW and it’s something we are very proud to have achieved,” Australian Bloodstock co-founder Luke Murrell said.
“Hathras has done an amazing job since he arrived here, he’s earned over $70,000 in three starts for Kris Lees and Mawingo has been here a bit over a year but to do what he’s done, a Group 1 and Group 2 win and to return more than $500,000 to his owners, it’s been outstanding.”
Murrell said the Australian Bloodstock bloodstock portfolio has flourished thanks to the help of agents as well as trainers Kris Lees, Anthony Freedman and Dean Binaisse and staff.
“We have worked hard analysing form and watching hours of racing videos from all over the world but our agents have helped us enormously to get the horses at the right prices to give us a chance to provide value for owners,” Murrell said.
“The trainers have done a terrific job with the horses when they arrive at their stables and the way they have performed in their new environments is a testament to the stables and staff.”
Murrell, an accomplished form analyst, said both horses have a great chance of pulling off a dream result, adding the dream result of an Australian Bloodstock quinella is not impossible.
“There’s no reason both Hathras and Mawingo can’t figure in the finish,” Murrell said. “Hathras is coming along in leaps and bounds at the right time and Mawingo will be a lot fitter for his Ranvet Stakes effort, which was pretty good.”
