Her half-brothers travel the world competing in Group I events but Irish-bred mare Freezy showed she has her own slice of staying talent with her win in Monday’s Hyderabad RC Handicap (1800m) at Caulfield.
Freezy is a half-sister to Melbourne Cup placegetter Jakkalberry and Italian Group I winner Crackerjack King and was imported to Australia by syndicators Australian Bloodstock and prominent owner Peter Carrick.
Two solid runs over 1300 and 1600 metres had the daughter of Dalakhani fit enough for her 1800-metre assignment with a strong tempo helping Freezy perform at her best.
Jockey Craig Williams positioned Freezy just off the pace before the Anthony Freedman-trained mare strode home strongly to beat the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Bec Said No Credit by two lengths.
“She felt very solid and that she was going to get further,” Williams said. I liked the way she raced with a lot more genuine tempo. With her head carriage, she looked a bit awkward but I think they have spent a lot of time trying to get her head down and get her more relaxed.
“Stepping up in distance, with probably a bit of cut in the track, she was good and solid today. She was really solid late and really controlled the race from halfway down the straight.”
Freezy was stakes-placed in Italy as a three-year-old but Freedman’s stable foreman Ash Yargi said the Flemington trainer was likely to search for Australian black type for the mare.
“Today was really good and would determine on what path she would go,” Yargi said. “She’s still a very light type of horse and she needs maturing, even as a four-year-old.
“Obviously the main aim will be chasing some black type, I’m not sure where that will be but Anthony has probably got a nice program for her.”
