Our German wonderhorse Lucas Cranach has drawn an inside gate for Saturday’s $2.6 million Caulfield Cup and is primed to run a huge race after a sparkling track gallop on Wednesday morning.
Working with his usual lead horse, Lucas powered home over the final 600m of his gallop to round off his Caulfield Cup preparation in fine style with jockey Corey Brown commenting that the work was lengths better than his first sit on the horse last week.
Part owner Ozzie Kheir proved to be the lucky charm at the barrier draw when he selected gate 3 for Lucas on Saturday. He will come into gate 2 if the emergency Midnight Martini does not get into the field.
“The horse has continued to improve throughout the campaign and we go to Caulfield confident of a big run,” said Australian Bloodstock’s Luke Murrell.
The horse must pass a Racing Victoria inspection on Friday morning before being given the all clear to take his place in the field after a minor hoof abscess was treated over the weekend.
He was given some light work this morning at Markdel and came through it with flying colours.
Let’s hope that Lucas has a bit of luck on Saturday and that his Australian debut is a winning one!
