Top Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller will partner the Melbourne Cup placegetter Lucas Cranach in Saturday’s Group II Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

Rawiller won the mount on the German-bred stallion after Cox Plate-winning rider Craig Williams decided to stick with the Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed in the $200,000 event.

Lucas Cranach will make his first appearance since the Melbourne Cup in the Peter Young Stakes, which will serve as the four-year-old’s only lead-up run before the Group I Australian Cup (2000m) on March 10.

Lucas Cranach’s trainer Anthony Freedman will work the Australian Bloodstock-owned stayer in blinkers on Tuesday before deciding whether to add them to the horse’s gear for his return to racing.

TAB Sportsbet has Lucas Cranach as an $8 third favourite to win the Australian Cup behind Americain at $4.20 and Southern Speed at $7.

Meanwhile, Williams will ride the handy sprinter Master Of Design in the Group I Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

Master Of Design is one of two David Payne-trained gallopers entered for the Oakleigh Plate but Cardinal Virtue is likely to miss the $400,000 sprint in favour of a race in Sydney in the next fortnight.
