EWCASTLE trainer Kris Lees is hoping it will be third time lucky when he again tries to get his star galloper Uate back to the races tomorrow.
Lees said yesterday that as ‘‘long as the weather holds’’ Uate would finally resume in the listed Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100metres) at Rosehill.
The three-year-old colt has been scratched twice recently because of bad weather. The latest was last week when Lees scratched him early on Saturday morning from the Eskimo Prince Quality after heavy rain hit Randwick.
‘‘I don’t want to cuddle him any longer, so as long as the weather holds he can go to the races on Saturday,’’ Lees said.
Uate showed great promise as a juvenile, including a win in the group3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) and a second to Helmet in the group1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
He failed dismally in two runs in the spring as a three-year-old but may be set to live up to his potential.
‘‘He couldn’t be going any better at home,’’ Lees said. ‘‘Now it is time to find out if he can get back to his form as a two-year-old in a race.
‘‘On what he is showing me, I am confident he will be competitive on Saturday. He has drawn a good gate and Glyn Schofield is an experienced jockey. The signs are there that he will go well.’’
