STABLE PAIR IN EXHIBITION HITOUT

Aug 28, 2013

NEWCASTLE: Wednesday, August 28, 2013: TOP Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman will partner German import Salon Soldier when he steps out in public for the first time at Broadmeadow tomorrow.

Trainer Kris Lees will gallop Salon Soldier and stablemate Pirate Bay between races at the midweek meeting.

Lees is looking to begin Salon Soldier's initial Australian campaign in the $150,000 Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) on the first day of the Newcastle spring carnival on Wednesday, September 18.

"The two horses will work over 1000 metres on the course proper," Lees said today.

"I'll get Hugh to ride Salon Soldier and Andrew Gibbons will be on Pirate Bay.

"It will give Salon Soldier a look at the course proper prior to him contesting the Cameron, which looks a suitable race to kick him off in."

Salon Soldier hasn't raced since finishing sixth of eight in a Group 2 event over 2212m st Baden Baden (Germany) on May 12 - a race which now has an outstanding form line.

Winner Novellist has subsequently won Group 1 features in France and England, whilst runner-up Waldpark (who like Salon Soldier was imported to Australia by Australian Bloodstock and is being prepared at Flemington by Anthony Freedman) has been well supported to win the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Salon Soldier has been nominated for both the Cox Plate and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) a week earlier.

Lees is considering barrier trialling Salon Soldier at Wyong on September 9.

"Now that Wyong has moved the trials forward a day, I will certainly look at trialling the horse there," Lees said.

"That would give him another nine days prior to running in the Cameron.

"I'm not thinking Salon Soldier can win the Cameron first-up, but it seems the right race to begin his campaign."

Pirate Bay will resume in either the Cameron or the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) at Randwick three days later.

Pirate Bay last raced when eighth in subsequent Brisbane Cup winner Moriarty's Lord Mayor's Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on May 11.

At his previous start he was an excellent third to last year's Melbourne Cup fourth Kelinni in the Listed JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 20.
