Big Duke demolishes rivals at Caulfield

Jan 04, 2017

Earlier in the day Weir won successive races with lightly raced imports Big Duke and Plein Ciel, who are both raced by Australian Bloodstock.

They were both ridden by Melbourne’s leading apprentice Ben Allen, who took his tally of city winners for the season to 23.

Both horses were having only their third start for Weir.

Plein Ciel is undefeated for him and Big Duke opened his account on Monday.

Weir said both horses would be suited by longer trips and could end up in nice staying races.

He said Big Duke, who won the 1800m Dennis Hanrahan Handicap by 4½ lengths, had turned the corner after his first two starts for the stable.

“Things weren’t easy for him but they have turned around,” Weir said. “He’s much more relaxed. He paraded and raced a lot better.”

He said Plein Ciel, who won the 1600m Allan Wicks Handicap, had a lot of improvement to come.
