This year’s Cox Plate will have at least one runner with recent overseas formlines in the field, with French entire Gold Trip booked for Melbourne later this year.

Australian Bloodstock co-director Jamie Lovett confirmed on Tuesday that Gold Trip has passed final vet tests and will join Melbourne’s premier training partnership of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace during this year’s Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Lovett indicated Gold Trip would relocate from the Chantilly stables of Fabrice Chappet to Harry and James Eustace’s yard in Newmarket and travel on the first international shipment to Australia, entering pre-travel quarantine at Newmarket on September 9 and arriving in Melbourne on AFL Grand Final Day (September 25).

Horses arriving on the first shipment are permitted to race in Melbourne from Caulfield Guineas Day (October 9) but Gold Trip is anticipated to be prepared for the $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley on October 23.

Gold Trip boasts strong European formlines, predominantly on rain-affected ground. His lone victory from 10 starts came in the G2 Prix Greffulhe (2200m) for three-year-olds at Lyon Parilly on soft ground.

The son of Outstrip ended his three-year-old season by finishing fourth, 2.5 lengths behind Sottsass in last year’s €5m G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2400m) on heavy ground.

Gold Trip has been placed at three of four starts on ground rated ‘good’ by French authorities.

The quickest conditions he struck came a month before the Arc when he was third in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) at Longchamp, finishing behind subsequent G1 Hong Kong International Vase (2400m) winner Mogul and recently retired Arc runner-up In Swoop.

Gold Trip has raced three times this year, placing at his past two starts in French G1s the Prix Ganay (2100m) at Longchamp on May 2 and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2400m) on July 4. He is a $26 chance for the Cox Plate with Sportsbet, with fellow European import Zaaki the $4.50 favourite.
