Andreas Wohler says he couldn’t be happier with how Ashrun has pulled up from Saturday’s Hotham win and believes his star is a genuine winning chance in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old kept a low profile at Werribee on Sunday following his win in the Hotham, coming from last with 61kg on his back to snare the final place in the Melbourne Cup.

Wohler said the horse had come through the win well and was now eyeing Tuesday’s Group 1.

“Really well. I’m surprised the way he is,” Wohler said.

“Such a race takes out of it (takes something out of the horse) but he’s eaten up, looks bright, moves well. Really happy.”

Wohler’s confidence could have taken a minor hit on Saturday night when Ashrun, who will be ridden by Declan Bates, drew barrier 24 for the Cup.

But the German trainer was keen to take a glass half-full approach to the gate with his $17 chance with Sportsbet.

“We shouldn’t have any interference for the first 1000m,” Wohler laughed.

“We shall have a closer look at how other horses are drawn and how they move on, forward, backward. From there we will make our plans.

“The way he ran yesterday then he should have a chance of being in very good money.”
